Having A Mirror

Person holding a mirror reflecting confidence and self-reflection for personal growth

The Reality Check We All Need

“Get over yourself.” Three blunt words that snapped me back into reality after I had spiraled into frustration and self-pity following a minor outpatient surgery. While my timeline said I’d be back on my feet in a few days, medical reality had other plans. Instead of bouncing back, I found myself frustrated, impatient, and slipping into negativity.

Sometimes all it takes is someone who knows you well enough to hold up a mirror and remind you of the truth.

When Negative Thoughts Take Over

Being human means we don’t always handle disruptions gracefully. When plans shift, negative thoughts can creep in, filling our minds with worry, dissatisfaction, or self-criticism. Left unchecked, these thoughts can grow into anxiety, depression, or isolation.

That’s why it’s so important to have people who keep us grounded—those who remind us of who we are beyond the fears and frustrations of the moment.

The Gift of Accountability

Having at least one person in your life who will tell you the truth, without fluff, is invaluable. That accountability acts as a mirror, reflecting the reality you may not see clearly for yourself. It helps prevent temporary struggles from turning into permanent beliefs about who you are.

When You Don’t Have a Mirror

Not everyone has that person at the ready. If you find yourself feeling isolated, therapy can help you process negative thoughts, reframe perspectives, and build a healthier support system. Sometimes, the first step is seeking out a professional who can guide you until you develop your own circle of support.

A Reminder for the Week Ahead

Accountability is a gift—whether it comes from a friend who texts “get over yourself” or from a therapist who helps reframe your lens. We all need mirrors in our lives to stay aligned with our best selves.
