Understanding Enneagram Type Four: The Creative Individualist
We’re back! For those who aren’t Type One, Two, or Three — this is your moment. The Enneagram series picks up with Type Four, and I promise the wait has been worth it.
As a quick refresher, the Enneagram is a system that reveals the nine core ways we show up in the world. It explains the why behind our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Each type is rooted in core motivation and fear, helping us discover who we are, why we are that way, and how we can grow into the best version of ourselves.
If you missed previous posts, you can catch up through the link in my bio and explore the full series.
The Pros and Cons of Being Enneagram Type Four
Type Fours are known as The Individualists. They are sensitive, introspective, imaginative, and deeply connected to their inner world. Many Fours fear blending in or losing their identity, so they strive to express their individuality in every way possible.
Fours crave authenticity — and they want to be understood for who they really are. Let’s explore what makes these creative souls shine, as well as the challenges they face.
The Pros of Being an Enneagram Four
Creative
Fours nurture their artistic and expressive talents. Their emotional depth fuels creativity, allowing them to create beauty from even the most complex feelings.
Strong Sense of Identity
Fours courageously embrace their real selves — strengths, flaws, quirks, and all. They cherish authenticity and follow what brings them joy.
Empathetic
Fours feel deeply — their own emotions and the emotions of those around them. This emotional intuition strengthens their relationships.
Idealistic
With rich inner worlds, Fours can imagine powerful possibilities for themselves. This idealism helps them dream big and express themselves boldly.
Romantic
Fours believe in deep, meaningful connection. They long to be fully seen and appreciated by someone who understands their inner complexity.
Self-Aware
One of the greatest strengths of a Four is their emotional honesty. They acknowledge the full spectrum of their feelings, helping them navigate painful moments with clarity.
The Cons of Being an Enneagram Four
Envy
Fours often feel something essential is missing within themselves — and may envy others who seem to have it. This can stir jealousy or comparison.
Moodiness
Fours can get lost in their emotional world. When overwhelmed, they may withdraw or assume others couldn’t possibly understand what they’re experiencing.
Self-Absorption
Because they are intensely focused on their inner landscape, Fours can inadvertently appear self-involved.
Self-Consciousness
Their self-awareness sometimes turns into self-doubt. Overthinking can make social interactions feel awkward or draining.
Tips for Growth as a Type Four
Fours thrive when they learn to balance emotional depth with emotional regulation and self-compassion.
Here’s how:
Practice Affirmations
When your inner critic gets loud, use grounding affirmations like:
“I am worthy.”
“I am authentic.”
“I am true to myself.”
“I create beauty wherever I go.”
Embrace Creativity
Channel your emotional richness into art, writing, music, or whatever outlet feels natural. Creativity is healing for the Four heart.
Focus on Your Unique Talents
Comparison is a trap for Fours. Step back from social media or triggering spaces when you feel envy rising. Celebrate your own gifts.
In Summary
At their best, Type Fours are deeply creative, intuitive, and unapologetically themselves. They bring beauty, emotional depth, and honesty to the world. But their emotional intensity needs care — and self-compassion is essential.
