Lunch Outside My Comfort Zone: A Lesson in Worthiness and Courage

“Anyone you have in your mind as an icon is an imperfect, flawed creature, just like all humans on the planet.”
Tim Ferriss

Last week, someone asked me a familiar question:
“If you could have lunch with anyone in the world, who would it be?”

I’ve never loved this question because it feels like there’s pressure to have the “right” answer with the “right” justification. One person? Just one? There are dozens of remarkable people I’d love to share a meal with.

Lately, I’ve been on a foodie kick — so lunch with Gordon Ramsey? Absolutely. Michael Phelps? Fascinating. Alex Honnold? Equal parts inspiring and terrifying.

But my real answer?

Brené Brown.

Anyone who knows me is not shocked. Her work changed my life — both personally and professionally. Her message is woven into the heart of what I do, which is why I trained in The Daring Way® in Houston (where I secretly hoped she’d make a surprise appearance… she didn’t, but her team was incredible!).

And yet, the moment I said her name, another sentence followed automatically:

“But that’s silly — why would she want to have lunch with me?”

Oof. Truthful. Human. And painfully relatable.

Why Would Someone You Admire Want to Meet You?

We build icons in our minds — people we admire, follow, study, or aspire to emulate. We elevate them. And in the process, we shrink ourselves.

Brené is a household name. A researcher. A storyteller. A cultural voice.

So why would she want to lunch with Melissa Russiano, a clinical social worker from Erie, Pennsylvania?

That question comes from vulnerability. From fear. From the tendency many of us share:
to retreat, play small, and assume we aren’t “enough.”

But, as Tim Ferriss says in The Four Hour Work Week, icons are human too — flawed, imperfect, relatable. And many powerful people were not born into powerful circles. They built connections because they were willing to try.

Which brings us to the heart of this post.

Fear Keeps Us Small — Worthiness Moves Us Forward

Once the idea of reaching out to Brené Brown was suggested to me, my stubborn side perked up. I’m always up for a challenge… but this one hit deeper.

Reaching out to someone you deeply admire requires:

  • Vulnerability

  • Courage

  • Self-worth

  • Risk

  • A willingness to hear “no”

  • And the belief that “why not me?”

We all have fears that shrink us:

  • Fear of rejection

  • Fear of failure

  • Fear of being seen

  • Fear of dreaming too big

  • Fear of looking foolish

  • Fear of stepping outside our comfort zone

So the real question becomes:

What is your fear?
And what is it keeping you from doing?

When Fear Meets Worthiness

Maybe your fear is:

  • Changing jobs

  • Pivoting careers

  • Setting boundaries

  • Starting something new

  • Ending a chapter

  • Beginning a dream

  • Turning 30, 40, 50, or 60 with intention

Fear will always keep you stuck.
But fear less?
Fear gently?
Fear consciously?
Fear with support?

That’s where growth begins.

Worthiness is the catalyst.
Trusting who you are — today, as you are — is the thing that nudges you forward.

And maybe even toward a lunch outside your comfort zone.

You Are Someone Worth Meeting

We often forget that while we have mentors, guides, and icons…
we are also that person for someone else.

Someone admires you.
Someone respects you.
Someone learns from you.
Someone thinks you’re inspiring.
Someone would love to have lunch with you.

Your worth is not dependent on accomplishments, timelines, weight loss goals, or business milestones.

You have value today, exactly as you are.

And when you embrace that truth, you can step into vulnerability with a steady heart, whether you’re reaching out to someone you admire — or courageously allowing others to reach toward you.

If you need support strengthening your worth and value as you step into your next brave moment, I’m here. Together we can walk through the fears that keep you small so you can finally step into the arena.

If perfectionism or comparison is fueling your fear of stepping outside your comfort zone, the Perfectionism Workbook can help you explore your personal expectations and build self-compassion as you take bold steps forward.

If you’re ready to dig deeper into your story and start showing up as your most authentic self, therapy can help.

I offer online therapy for helping professionals, busy professionals, and therapists who are ready to reconnect with their worth and live with greater balance and clarity.
