Happy Independence Day…But Are You Free?

Every year on the Fourth of July, we celebrate freedom. This year is 250 years of freedom.

We gather with family and friends.  We watch fireworks light up the night sky.  We eat yummy food.  We grill hamburgers, wave flags, and pause—if only for a moment—to appreciate the freedoms so many fought to protect.  And still fight to protect - even today.

It's a beautiful tradition.  It’s being American.  Red, white and blue.

But this year, I've found myself wondering a different question.

What does freedom actually mean?

Not as a nation - but as a person.

Because here's what I've learned after nearly three decades of working with incredible women.

Many of us are living in lives that look successful...

...while quietly feeling trapped.

Trapped by expectations.  Trapped by perfectionism (yes I am talking to you…).  Trapped by people-pleasing.  Trapped by careers we've outgrown or even gotten bored with.

Trapped by relationships that no longer reflect who we've become.  Trapped by the belief that everyone else's needs come before our own.

Sometimes we're trapped by fear.  Sometimes by guilt.  Sometimes by shame.  Sometimes by an identity we've spent decades building - and hiding behind.  And sometimes by the simple belief that changing our lives would disappoint the people we love.

The hardest prisons to escape are often the ones no one else can see.

The prison of always needing to prove yourself.  The prison of believing your worth is measured by your productivity.  The prison of thinking rest has to be earned (news flash - it never needs to be earned!).  The prison of believing you have to keep living the same chapter simply because you've spent years writing it.

Here's the truth I've come to believe.

Freedom isn't always about changing your circumstances.  Sometimes it's about changing your relationship with yourself.

Freedom is giving yourself permission to say no without apologizing.

Freedom is choosing rest without guilt or shame or “I should be doing….”.

Freedom is allowing yourself to evolve - even for the 83rd time..

Freedom is trusting your intuition over everyone else's expectations.

Freedom is recognizing that you are already enough—not because of what you've accomplished, but because of who you are.

Ironically, the women I work with aren't looking for easier lives.  They're looking for lives that feel like their own.  Lives built on intention instead of obligation.  Alignment instead of approval.

Purpose instead of performance.  And perhaps that's the kind of independence many of us are really longing for.

This Fourth of July, while you're watching fireworks explode across the sky, I hope you'll pause for just a moment and ask yourself one question.

Where in my life am I still waiting to be free?

Not free from responsibility.  Not free from hard work. Not even free from being Type A.

But free from the stories that tell you that your worth depends on how much you achieve, produce, fix, or carry.

Because real freedom isn't found in doing more.  It's found in becoming more fully yourself.

And maybe…

Just maybe…

Your declaration of independence doesn't begin with changing your life.

It begins with changing the story you've been telling yourself about who you're allowed to become.  Changing the story to be what you have always envisioned.  Even that one that feels too big, too amazing and too much of a dream.

That, my friend, is your real freedom.

Reflection

If today were your own personal Independence Day…

What would you choose to set yourself free from?

I'd love to hear your answer in the comments.

Happy (belated) Fourth of July.

May you celebrate not only the freedom you've inherited...

...but the freedom you're still becoming brave enough to choose.
