Finding Light in the Darkness: Understanding the True Meaning of Hope
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”
— Desmond Tutu
The past six months have stretched many beyond what they thought possible. Clients, friends, families, and entire communities are questioning their stability, their relationships, their future, and the very state of the world around them. Hope feels harder to access — and yet more necessary than ever.
In the past week alone, hope has been tested in new ways. Hope for our country. Hope for the next generation. Hope for truth and peace. And if we’re being honest, maybe even hope to return to the simplicity of life in late 2019.
What Hope Really Means
Hope is defined as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen” — but it’s deeper than that. Hope is a mindset. A quiet internal trust. A belief that something good is still possible, even when the evidence feels thin.
Hope is woven into human nature.
Everyone hopes for something — even when they don’t realize it.
Hope influences:
How we envision the future
How we make meaning of the present
The narrative we tell ourselves about our own lives
And while hope is powerful, it is also widely misunderstood.
What Hope Is NOT
Hope is not the same as optimism.
Hope is not sugarcoating reality.
Hope is not ignoring pain, conflict, or uncertainty.
Hope is not impossible or unrealistic.
A deeply pessimistic person can still have hope in one specific area.
A deeply optimistic person can lose hope in another.
Hope is focused.
Hope is personal.
Hope is the belief that something good could happen — not a guarantee that it will.
Why Hope Matters So Much
People often associate hope with dire circumstances — and yes, that’s when hope becomes loudest. But hope is just as important in daily life. It provides the bridge between where you are and where you desire to be.
Hope:
Connects your past and present to your future
Improves emotional regulation
Motivates meaningful action
Helps set realistic goals
Supports creativity, initiative, and resilience
Hope helps you dream.
Hope helps you heal.
Hope helps you move forward.
As Martin Seligman says, “Hope reduces stress and the feeling of helplessness, boosts happiness, and improves the quality of your life.”
Hope is not fluff. Hope is science. Hope is strength.
When Hope Feels Hard to Find
This week alone, families have fractured, friendships strained, and uncertainty has widened existing divides. As I was writing this, a client emailed requesting an emergency session due to family conflict surrounding the election and COVID-19. Their hope had all but disappeared.
A lack of hope affects:
Emotional wellbeing
Physical health
Decision-making
Creativity
The ability to dream
The motivation to move forward
Feeling “stuck” is often a sign that hope has slipped quietly out the back door.
But here’s the truth:
Hope can always be found again.
Even if all you can grasp is a sliver.
Why Hope Is Significant — Even Now
Hope will help you:
Sit with the discomfort instead of being consumed by it
Stay rooted in what matters
Imagine a future—even if it looks different than before
Maintain motivation to take small steps forward
Hope guides your choices.
Hope builds resilience.
Hope increases your ability to see possibilities instead of only problems.
And in a world that feels upside down, hope matters more than ever.

Because no matter what you’re facing — personally or professionally — I fully believe that hope can be rekindled.
There is always a reason to have hope.
